I love free resources.
I particularly love when they are simple to use!
I recently discovered ReadWorks and their database of over 100 K-8 passages. While this is not a silver bullet to solve the ongoing quest for leveled informational text, this is a great place to start. So, how can you use these passages?
- I am not a fan of the included questions, but I love short science and social studies passages that I can use to model specific reading strategies for my students.
- When everyone needs the same shared passage, these are great selections to pull.
- Formative assessment! When students are all reading different books, it can be challenging to accurately assess is they have mastered the comprehension skills that you are targeting. These are useful to get a snapshot of where students are with certain reading skills.
- Learning centers and stations! These are easy to put into manila folders or notebooks at K-8 stations for students.
